Design project: Lies Lies_Under the Veil

Fatima Nooh

In the design project “Lies Lies”, students were to design a book on a lie. Students could experiment with different analogue and digital printing technologies, materials, tools, bindings. Fatima Nooh’s book “Under the Veil” focuses on women wearing the hijab, on the contrast between external and internal image, between the women’s actual role or position in society and an external, maybe more western, potentially biased, perspective on them. She combines photographs of the Sarajevo based photographer Ziyah Gafić with texts, original quotes of the women shown. Productionwise, she combines digital imagery with traditional letterpress printing and uses red transparent pages to oppose stereotypes with actual statements.
